Post-wildfire recovery
is in our hands

Time is of the essence. Many areas that have been hit by high-intensity wildfires are at risk of converting to non-forestlands without the right intervention.

Time is of the essence. Many areas that have been hit by high-intensity wildfires are at risk of converting to non-forestlands without the right intervention.

Ways we are helping

Restoring wildfire-
impacted lands

Reforestation, fuel management and fuel breaks are crucial for restoring areas impacted by wildfires. In South Central Oregon, only half of the 144,000 acres on U.S. Forest Service lands that need to be restored have enough seed supply.

A dedicated workforce is needed to source seeds from private and public lands, process and store them, and monitor cone production — activities that will ramp up reforestation efforts.

Tree nurseries in the U.S. produce only 1.3 billion seedlings per year, not nearly enough to reforest lands impacted by wildfire.

At American Forests, we’re helping strengthen the reforestation pipeline by removing barriers to restoration. This includes creating and filling jobs to address seed shortages.

We’ve partnered with the state of California, federal agencies, NGOs, academics and private industry to help facilitate the California Cone Corps, a new workforce development pathway program.
